Nixon’s Windmill Artefact Barn – Hahndorf

At The Crafted Timber and Building Co., we are passionate about preserving South Australia’s rich history through heritage carpentry and bespoke craftsmanship. One of our standout projects was the restoration of Nixon's Mill, the oldest surviving windmill structure in South Australia, located in the heart of the Adelaide Hills. Commissioned by the Mount Barker Council, we were tasked with creating a structure to house artefacts from the original flour mill, dating back to 1842.

Project Highlights

Recycled Native Timber Construction

The Barn was built using a mix of recycled native timbers, including spotted gum and stringy bark, reflecting the resourcefulness of 19th-century carpentry. These durable, sustainable materials bring warmth and character while preserving the site’s historical essence.

Traditional Craftsmanship

Our team employed traditional mortise and tenon jointing techniques to construct the barn, staying true to the methods used in the 1800s. This technique not only ensures structural integrity but also adds to the authenticity of the build.

Design Inspired by Hahndorf’s Heritage

The Barn’s design mirrors the wooden slab barns commonly built in Hahndorf during the 1800s, creating a structure that seamlessly fits within the historical landscape of the Adelaide Hills.

Custom Signage

To complete the project, we crafted bespoke signage that complements the barn’s rustic aesthetic while providing clear and engaging information about the artefacts housed within.
