Our History

With over 25 years of carpentry and building experience in both Australia and the UK, company director Ralph Coupland brings unmatched expertise to every project. Ralph began his career in the United Kingdom, restoring historic and heritage buildings with some of the UK’s most talented timber framing craftspeople. It was here that he learned the centuries-old craft of traditional timber framing, and the art of carefully preserving, restoring, and showcasing the story that a historic building has to offer.

Since migrating to Australia in 2008, Ralph has spent 16 years integrating his UK training with Australian building techniques, establishing The Crafted Timber and Building Co. Based in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, the company blends traditional craftsmanship with modern sustainable practices.

Our expertise includes:

Ralph lives in a custom-built 8-star energy-rated home, designed with quality insulation, double glazing, and site-specific considerations. As a result, the house stays effortlessly cool in summer and warm in winter. This hands-on experience inspires our designs and ensures your project performs exceptionally in all seasons.

Ralph’s active role in the Country Fire Service SA gives him unique insights into fire-resistant building design, a vital consideration in the Adelaide Hills. His passion for permaculture principles further enhances our approach to sustainable construction. Having completed a Permaculture Design Certificate in 2024 at The Food Forest in South Australia with David Holmgren, the co-originator of the permaculture concept, and permaculture pioneers Annemarie and Graham Brookman, permaculture principles hugely influence our work at The Crafted Timber and Building Co. and are at the forefront of our minds when we are designing and working on buildings. We aim for our buildings to not only be beautiful, but also to perform well, as well as actively try to reduce waste at each step of the design and building process.
